You can probably recut the crown at lower angles without a
change in the width of the stone (unless the crown is already very
low). Making the stone into a doublet should be a last resort.

Howdy Gang,

Just a quick note to let everyone know that we are just over a week away from
the field trip to dig peridot in the California desert. I am going to scout
the area tomorrow (Friday) with Jerry Newman, and will post all the details on
location, etc., over the weekend. If you are planning to go however, you need
to email me now at: paulahlstedt@earthlink.net to reserve a space - if you
don't write and let me know that you are attending, then we may leave without
you - so be sure to contact me immediately so that I can get a roster going.

Also, my projects are demanding much of my time these days, so the field trip
announcement over the weekend will be my last post to this digest for a while.
It was good to have a few extra weeks that I had not planned on to talk to
everyone, but I really have to go now because my work is piling up something
terrible! LOL!

Oh, one more thing - I am still taking letters to solicit the Faceter's
Symposium organizers to allow me to represent the IFA and speak at the event.
I have about 87 letters now, but wish that ALL of you would write in and
request that I am allowed to speak - just shoot me a note addressed to the
Faceter's Symposium 2003 staff requesting this to: paulahlstedt@earthlink.net

I did mention previously that there are some hurdles to overcome (I have been
aware that Glenn and his staff are preventing me from speaking), so please do
write in so that we can show that the PUBLIC wants to have me represent the
IFA and present a proper faceting program that they can learn from and use to
advance their faceting ability and knowledge.

Best wishes,

Paul Ahlstedt

How well does cold water clean?

A man went to visit his 90 year old grandfather in a very secluded, rural
area of the state he lived in. After spending the night, his grandfather
prepared breakfast for him consisting of eggs and bacon. He noticed a film
like substance on his plate and he
questioned, Grandfather, .....are these plates clean? His grandfather
replied.... Those plates are as clean as cold water can
get them, so go on and finish your meal.

Later on that after noon, while eating the hamburgers his grandfather made
for lunch, he noticed tiny specks around the edge of his plate, and a
substance that looked like dried egg yokes.... So he asked again,
Grandfather, are you sure these plates are clean? Without looking up from
his hamburger, the grandfather says..... I told you before, those dishes
are as clean as cold water can get them, now don't ask me about it

Still later on that afternoon, he decided to get dinner in a nearby
As he was leaving, his Grandfather's dog started to growl and would not
let him pass ... Grandfather, your dog won't let me out. Without diverting
attention from the baseball game his Grandfather was watching, he

Hello all, I still have a Xristal-Tek87 for sale. I am reducing the price
because I really have to sell this fine machine. I have cut maybe 15 stones
on it. It is basically brand new and in perfect condition. It has the 8"
adapter ring on it and the dial indicator. It is a very sturdy rugged
machine. I am reducing the price to $900 and will still consider all

Thank you,
